Secondary School

Welcome to the Secondary School at Harare International School, where teachers and students work enthusiastically and rewardingly to meet the school’s Mission Statement and the IB Learner Profile, in a challenging but joyful environment. The Secondary School encompasses Grades 6 to 12.

Through the delivery of a strong academic program, a diverse range of extra-curricular opportunities and personalized pastoral care, we strive to equip the young adults graduating from HIS to live happy and productive lives through their tertiary education and beyond. We encourage students in the Secondary School to think critically, to develop an appreciation for multiple perspectives and a globally minded outlook, to follow their passions and to provide service to others. We know that many of our alumni will contribute to making the world a better place in the years ahead.Harare International School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum school so the students in Grades 6 to 10 follow the rigorous but enriching IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), designed to support the acquisition of knowledge and conceptual understanding through inquiry, critical thinking, and problem solving. The MYP builds upon all that was learned in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) which culminates in Grade 5, and prepares our maturing scholars to meet the academic challenges of the IB Diploma Programme (DP) which they follow in Grades 11 and 12. Here is more information on the MYP at HIS.

Students in Grade 10 will complete their final year of the MYP which culminates with every student completing a Personal Project to showcase their learning over their first 5 years of Secondary School. Over the course of the year the students will also be guided through the process of selecting their final subjects for their final two year of school.

Students in Grades 11 and 12 will focus on the IB DP, which is a globally recognized high school qualification. Over their last two years of school, students doing the IB Diploma need to study six main subjects, complete an Extended Essay, complete the Theory of Knowledge course and meet their Community-Activity-Service (CAS) requirements. Some students elect to follow a personalized subset of the IB Diploma curriculum and focus on attaining their HIS High School Diploma. Over these last two years, the students will also be guided through their university applications. Here is more information on the Diploma Programme at HIS.

In addition to academic work our secondary students also engage in a broad spectrum of activities exposing them to enriching challenges outside the classroom, including community service, sports teams, clubs, arts groups, and more, as they continue molding themselves into well-rounded, contributing members of global society.

Once again, welcome to the Secondary School At HIS.
