Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to Harare International School!

I hope that as you are reading this message that you and your family are healthy and well.  The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has sent the entire world into turmoil, with few unscathed.  At HIS, the impact has precipitated a gathering of inspirational brains, including our two dauntless Principals, an intrepid team of teachers, and a audacious team of students, to plan for a positive start to the 2020-21 school year that nimbly balances sound learning with building relationships and wellbeing.  In developing this evolving approach, we use our Mission statement and our Strategic Priorities.

Over the past few decades, pre-COVID-19, I’m sure that we’ve heard predictions about an automated future of education, where teachers would be replaced with robots and artificial intelligence. If this pandemic has revealed anything to us, it is that human connection and the value of teacher-student relationships will not be easily replaced.

We have started the year with At-A-Distance-Learning, which means that campus is closed for students.  Our planning and schedule allow us to be agile, able to move with ease between At-A-Distance-Learning and Hybrid/On Campus learning, with the flipped classroom and blended learning approach central to our community’s experience.  Do we have this perfected?  Not yet.  We – teachers, students and parents – are truly Trail-Blazers, creating our future in this unfamiliar landscape.

What else would I like to share with you about learning at HIS?

HIS is a not-for-profit international school.  This is important as it means that all fees are dedicated to providing the best educational experiences for our students.

We are a Continuum International Baccalaureate School, offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the highly sought Diploma Programme (DP).  This means that students’ learning is rigourous, inquiry-based and authentic, and incorporate experiences that extend beyond the classroom.

Our student population continues to represent nearly 50 different nationalities, and our teaching faculty includes over 15 different nationalities.  Our rich diversity enhances our close-knit and thoughtful community.

Whether you are new to HIS this year, or are a returning family, experiences at HIS should enrich your mind and body.  We hope that our website is a practical source of information and celebrates our unique identity.   If you would like to make an appointment to meet our dedicated leadership team, our enthusiastic teachers, please contact us at:

It is my pleasure to welcome you to our community. I look forward to meeting you and to an undoubtedly remarkable year!
