Thank you for your interest in Harare International School. Our school’s purpose is to serve the international and local community. Currently there are over forty countries represented at Harare International School from Early Childhood 1 through to Grade 12.

We are an International Baccalaureate school fully authorized in the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme.  The School’s program for Grades 11 and 12 is the IB Diploma Program.

Harare International School follows the Northern Hemisphere School Calendar, which means that our school year runs from approximately mid August until mid June.
We have a rolling admissions process in Elementary and Middle School, so your child is welcome anytime.

Our application process is fully online. You don’t have to complete any paperwork, you can do it all directly via his.openapply.com/apply.

Please read the below information carefully before commencing the process.

Before starting the process, we suggest that you have the documentation stated in Part 1 saved on your desktop for ease of access.

PART 1

Step 1:

  • Gather the following necessary documents in digital format and have them ready to upload when prompted:

  • Passport copy of each student applying

  • Head and shoulders or passport photo of each student applying

  • School reports/ grade level reports/ transcripts (you may need to request these from your current school or previous schools)

  • Any other evaluations (speech and language or education psychologist reports) if applicable.

  • Please have vaccination records ready

Step 2:  Complete the online application form on OpenApply – uploading necessary documentation

Step 3:   Pay the application fee invoice – this will be sent to you once you submit your application- do not submit an application unless you understand that you will be invoiced.  The application fee of $250.00 will be invoiced automatically when you submit an application. If you do not wish to be invoiced, please do not submit your application. You can save your application and go back to as many times as you like prior to submission. However, once you submit you are indicating that you are making a full application and you understand that you’ll be invoiced the fee of $250.00

The Application fee is not applicable to students applying for EC1 and EC2, but should you continue to Kindergarten, this will become due.

Once we have received your application/s and the application fee, your application/s will be sent for review. Should you work for an Embassy, please ask the Embassy for a letter confirming they will be responsible for all fees – this will suffice as proof of payment.

We will keep you informed along each step of the process.

After completing Part 1 of the online application, the Principal and/or School Counsellor will go through you application.  Once the Principal is satisfied that we can accommodate your child at Harare International School then you will be invited to complete Part 2 of the online application.

PART 2

Medical and invoicing details required.

Only once all documentation in Part 2 is complete will we invoice you the Registration Fees (if applicable), Capital Levy, and Tech Levy (if applicable) and tuition fees.

PART 3

On completion of Part 2 we will proceed to Part 3 where we will invite your child for an assessment/testing with the relevant School (Elementary/Middle/High), please note the assessment/testing is only to get to know your child better and to determine their areas of strength and weakness so we may assist them better.  We will also invoice you Elementary:

We will schedule an Orientation Working Session with the elementary school principal Mr. Niel Petersen. He will do some fun (maths/reading/writing) activities with your children to get to know them better and it gives you as parents the opportunity to ask any questions you might have.

EC1 – our EC1 Teacher will arrange a 30 minute session in the classroom to get to know your child better and to assess if they are ready to start in our EC1 class.

Secondary:

We will schedule some tests for your child, e.g. MAP and Language testing.

Admissions testing will be conducted to assist in determining appropriate grade level placements.

Once these assessments/tests have been completed and payment has been made in full, may your child attend class.

Harare International School admits students from the international community in Zimbabwe (overseas students). It also offers a limited number of places to local students (i.e. permanent residents or Zimbabwe citizens). The school admits students of all races, colour, and ethnic origins to all the rights and privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.

Admission shall be based upon students’ records and test scores submitted as required by the professional staff to determine:

  • The potential of the applicant to benefit from the educational services available.

  • The capacity of the Harare International School to meet the educational needs of the applicant.

  • The ability of the Harare International School to meet the behavioural or emotional needs of the student.

Please be aware that omitting to supply, or submission of any false or misleading information regarding the applicant, will result in your child’s offer of a place at Harare International School being withdrawn.

It is your responsibility to disclose any and all information regarding your child that is deemed to be necessary by the school to make an informed decision.

A general awareness regarding General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) requirements for data protection across the EU is a something Harare International School (HIS) is working on.   At HIS we have been working with Faria Systems, the provider of Open Apply, our school’s admissions portal and Managebac, our schools attendance, curriculum and reporting system to ensure that the privacy and security of your personal data is accurate and within the confines of the new GDPR Regulations which was effective from May 25, 2018.

Faria Systems have been committed to data privacy and security for over 10 years, and, as one of the world’s only learning platforms with ISO 27001 : 2013 Information Security Certification are already prepared for the upcoming GDPR changes with a strong set of organizational and technical security measures.

HIS has already begun the process of analyzing the way we process, handle, store and share our community data. This will remain an ongoing process to ensure our policies are in line with local data laws as well as those of the GDPR. Protecting data of students, parents, faculty and staff, both past and present is of paramount importance to the school.

The Merit Scholarship was a long-time dream of Harare International School and it became a reality in the 2012 – 2013 school year. HIS started with admission of two students in grade ten and the School continues to enroll two more students to grade ten every year.

Our Merit Scholarship is currently undertaken in March, and students from local schools apply for admission based on their academic merit, as well as their ability to add value to our student body – through leadership opportunities, athletics, and interest in perusing the IB Diploma, which is a unique opportunity in Harare.

Who can apply?

Students currently in Year 10 or 11

  • Students who are fluent, with a high standard of written and spoken English
  • Proof of 7 or more A’s at “O’ Levels – High academic potential
  • Students who are willing to study in a multi-cultural environment
  • Students with personal integrity and drive

How to apply?

  • Complete IB Scholarship Program Application form and send to ljohnson@his.ac.zw outlining your interest in the IB Diploma Program and studying in a multi-cultural community.
  • Include copies of your two latest school reports.
  • Proof of 7 or more A’s at “O’ Levels .
  • Include completed Form of Recommendation from your current Head Teacher/Principal or other Senior Teacher to evaluate your academic potential and personal integrity.

How soon do I need to register my child?

It is advisable to register your child as soon as you know you will be relocating to Harare so that we may inform you of your options and what you will need to bring with you for admission to the school.

Can I Apply Online?

When can applications be submitted?

We have open and ongoing admission into the school, therefore applications may be submitted at any time during the school year.

Do you have long waiting lists for places?

No, we don’t have waiting lists at the moment. As things can change rapidly, we however encourage to apply as soon as possible.

Do you have students boarding at HIS?

Harare International School is an independent day school and does not have any boarding facilities.

What languages are being taught?

The language of instruction is English. French or Spanish are offered as an additional language, beginning in Early Childhood 2 all the way through Grade 12. Students from Early Childhood 2 to Grade 2 will take Spanish as an additional language, the other grades may select either French or Spanish.

What activities are available after school?

We have a wide range of activities after school ranging from intellectual to physical. A few examples are soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, martial arts, gymnastics, golf, yoga, chess, math games, environmental club, I-pads, cooking, various art activities, orchestra and more.

Do HIS students wear a uniform?

While we do not have a formal uniform or required dress, there is a dress code that ensures that all members of the HIS community dress in a respectful manner.

What type of food is available to my child?

Our canteen offers a range of meals at a nominal cost. Options include a hot meal, sandwiches, juice, pies etc. Students may also bring their own snacks and lunches each day. Microwaves are available if your child would like to warm their food.

Is there a fee waiver or tuition deduction for siblings and / or children of alumni?

While we love to have families, both new, returning, and multigenerational, our fee schedule and structure remains the same for everyone regardless of number of siblings or if a child of an alumni. The fee schedule is updated annually and is available by going to the Tuition Information page .

Where do teachers come from?

The HIS teaching staff comprises of members from throughout the world including a balance of local and international hires.
